About

Nothing Special was the name of an artist-run series of exhibitions in an 11 by 11 foot room on the second floor of an art studio in the West Adams neighborhood of Los Angeles from January 2019 – March 2020.

Exhibitions revolved around simple themes that made a virtue of the gallery’s limitations, featuring projects that either expanded upon or existed in parallel to the participants’ usual artistic practice.

Our mission was to promote the work of artists and to spark creative dialogues between members of Los Angeles’s art community. Each Nothing Special show was numbered in sequence for the duration of the series, and included a limited edition ‘zine intended to broaden the scope of and reach of the conversation.

Nothing Special operated outside the mainstream gallery system in Los Angeles and was guided by the belief that artistic merit should not be determined by commercial viability.
